110th Street/Central Park North (IRT White Plains Road Line)

110th Street/Central Park North Station · Opened 11/23/1904

This line was part of the original IRT route, starting from from 96th and Broadway (which is described on the IRT West Side/Broadway page) to 145th and Lenox with a later extension to Bronx Park at East 180 Street and Boston Road. The line's further extension was changed due to protests from the Bronx Zoo that trains would be bad for the animals. The S-curve was built to today's East 180 Street Station and the Bronx Park spur demolished. There is a small stub left just past the East 177th Street/West Farms Square. The Lenox portion was extended in 1968 to 148th street, the new terminal station being at grade level next to the IRT yards. We will board at 96th Street and ride to both 148th St./Lenox Terminal and E. 241st St./White Plains Road.

Leaving 96th St. we descend to a lower level and turn east under 104th Street, then north under Lenox Avenue. Our first stop is 110th Street. This station has an island platform with the fare control at the south end of the station at platform level. There is also a high exit in the center. The station has been renovated.
