Coney Island Tour | Car Repair Shop

The Wheel, Truck, & Axle Shop is certified by the Association of American Railroads, which means that the shop is qualified to repair axles and recondition roller bearings for all railroads in the United States. The Wheel & Axle Shop supplies all axles for the entire Transit Authority and SIRT. Last year the shop produced 4,103 wheel/axle sets, and maintains 788 trucks on a modern production line set-up. The Truck Shop also does all truck repairs and maintenance for approximately half of the entire subway car fleet. The wheel boring machine reconditions the center of the wheel where it joins with the axle. The Wheel Truing machine puts a new profile on a pair of subway wheels after excessive or unusual wear. The cutting process is performed without having to remove the truck from under the car body. In 1994, 2,669 wheel sets were trued.
