  • Coupling/Numbering Arrangement: All married pairs.
  • Stainless steel
  • 60' long, 10' wide
  • 196 cars rebuilt 1987-1988 by GE
  • All cars in this class retired by March 19, 2009. 4098/4099 was the last pair running (on the C, retired 3/19/2009).

4000-4001 Yard accident, 207th Street (1971?).
4028-4029 Held for New York Transit Museum collection. Recently spotted at Pitkin Yard.

4063 Collision with 4248 at Dyckman St. (early 1980s) Sustained front end damage. Received R-42 storm door and was given an R-16 roof line (sign area). R-42 storm door has since disappeared (during GOH).
4088-4089 First pair of R-38's scrapped, Spring 2008. They had been partially stripped and out of service at 207th St. Yard for nearly 10 years prior to scrapping.
