Coney Island Complex

The New York City Transit Complex at Coney Island is one of the largest transportation facilities in North America. Opened in 1926, the Coney Island Complex occupies 75 acres of land in the southern part of Brooklyn, New York. Tours of this facility are occasionally sponsored by the New York Transit Museum.

The Overhaul Shop is a 24/7 operation providing extensive repair and comprehensive major overhaul services for more than 5,800 subway cars and the entire Staten Island Rapid Transit fleet. It is comprised of three separate buildings, the Main Overhaul Shop (360,000 square feet), the Electric Motor Repair Shop (37,500 square feet), and the Pneumatic Shop (30,000 square feet). Most of the text in this article is from the MTA Coney Island Complex information packet.

Also available is a 1926 description of the shops as published in the B.M.T. employee newsletter B.M.T. Monthly.
