Overview
Rail transit in Pittsburgh consists of light rail lines operated by the Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT, which also operates regional bus service), two cable-driven inclines (the Monongahela Incline operated by PAT; and the Duquesne Incline, operated by a preservation group). South of Pittsburgh (at Arden) is the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, incorporating a segment of the original Pittsburgh Railways interurban line to Washington, PA.
The PAT light rail lines have gone through several iterations of budget cuts, resulting in the (temporary) closure of one of the lines, but also, in 2012, expanded the downtown part of the system. PAT had a large PCC operation, and in fact only as recently as 1999 did it retire the last of the PCC cars from service. Modern LRVs now operate the light rail lines.
Light Rail Lines
The PAT Light Rail lines are now identified by color: RED and BLUE. Red Line service operates primarily to Castle Shannon and South Hills Village via Mt. Lebanon; Blue Line service operates primarily to Library via Overbrook, with some service operating to South Hills Village. The former (confusing) designations of 42M, 42S, 44L, 47L, 47S have been discontinued. There is a third light rail line, operating from downtown to South Hills Junction via Allentown, known as the #52, which is presently not operating due to budget constrants.
| Line | Terminal | Terminal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| RED Line via Mt. Lebanon | Overbrook Junction | Allegheny (North Side) | |
| RED Line via Mt. Lebanon | South Hills Village | Allegheny (North Side) | |
| BLUE Line Via Overbrook | Library | Allegheny (North Side) | |
| BLUE Line Via Overbrook | South Hills Village | Allegheny (North Side) | |
| 52 Via Allentown | South Hills Junction | ... | Not operating. Does not serve Station Square. |
