Framing Union Square, Mary Miss (1998)

Artist Mary Miss created standalone panels using historic architectural elements recovered during the renovation of the 14th Street/Union Square station complex. The six "14" eagles were original elements of the 1904 station construction but most were hidden in disused side platforms along the Contract One IRT route. (Similar eagles are located at Brooklyn Bridge and 33rd Street stations.) Additionally there are red frames in the station walls at 115 locations highlighting a fragment of the station's construction such as old mosaics, rivets, steelwork, and wiring. The artist said of the work: "I'm inviting the public to look below the surface, to see a slice of the station, its structure, its history." Sources: mta.info, artnet.com.
