Artwork: Times Square Mural (Roy Lichtenstein)

From nycsubway.org

Location: 42nd Street-Times Square ยท Installed: 1994

"Times Square Mural, a 6-foot-high, 53-foot-long panel that revisits the history of New York transportation.... The first panel shows a portion of an arch ... rendered to resemble tile and masonry, the materials of the 1904 subway. The next arch metamorphoses into a steel girder, distilling the Machine Age of the 1930's, when metal gained popularity as a symbol of modernism. Streaking through the arches is .. a winged spaceship, suavely streamlined in the period manner." Source: nytimes.com 9/1/2002.

"Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City in 1923. He studied painting at the Art Students League and at the School of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Columbus, later receiving BFA and MFA degrees from Ohio State University. ... Lichtenstein has taught at Ohio State University, the State University of New York at Oswego, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey and at the University of California, Irvine...." The Lichtenstein Foundation has an official page about the installation.

Lichtenstein's other New York City mural, "Mural With Blue Brushstroke" can be seen in the atrium of the Equitable Building, Seventh Avenue at 51st Street.
