34th Street/Penn Station (IND 8th Avenue)

34th Street/Penn Station Station · Opened 9/10/1932

Four tracks, two side and one island platforms. The two side platforms are used by the local trains and the center island by the express trains. This arrangement was planned to discourage transfer between local and express due to anticipated high volume. At present the tile band and name tablets are maroon with no border. I-beams are dark green. The station has 3 booths on each local platform plus booths on the lower mezzanine. The station also has part time booths in Penn Station itself near the LIRR level for a total of 9 booths! This station is being renovated so the description is subject to frequent changes. This station is the 5th busiest in the system.
