116th Street/Columbia University Station · Opened 10/27/1904

Local station with three tracks and two side platforms. A picture of the school is in the small mosaic tile border. There was a central entry hall on the median of Broadway until the 1960s, at which time it was removed and replaced by the present stairways along the sidewals. sidewalks. Fortunately, the station already had a crossover that could be extended out over the local tracks to the sidewalks.

At 72nd Street the station house communicates directly with the island platforms with no easy way to relocate the entrances to the sidewalks. At 96th Street there was already sidewalk stairways into the local side platforms and a crossunder, so the station house there could be closed with no loss of service or access.
