Sutter Avenue/Rutland Road (Brooklyn IRT)

Sutter Avenue/Rutland Road Station · Opened 12/24/1920

Our train now leaves the tunnel to become an elevated route with two tracks to New Lots Avenue. The line structure has two tracks (except at Junius Street which has an non-electrified center track for the Linden Shop turn off and connection to the L line.)

Although our line is two tracks the structure is wide enough for a center track and evidence in the stations above the mezzanine shows a partial third track existed in all stations except New Lots and Junius Street. This partial track has the trackway plus cross ties set into the concrete but no rails. I have no information as to whether there were rails and they were removed or if the trackway with cross ties is the end of the idea for a third track. Along part of the line, the space is used for various signal rooms and mechanical rooms. There are no crossovers except at Junius and New Lots. Careful examination of the steel leads me to believe that the project made some more progress before cancellation; there are bolt/rivet holes where steel for a center track could have been placed. A project to renovate the elevated structure is pending which will include station mezzanines and stairs to/from the street. All have wood mezzanines with doors from the Fare control to platform level. All have covered over old signs and reuse the old light posts for new lights.

Our first elevated station is Sutter Avenue/Rutland Road which is over East 98th Street. This station has full canopy on the north end and no windscreen on the south end.
