Broadway Junction Station · Opened 12/28/1906The Canarsie line's platform at Broadway Junction station must be one of the highest elevated platforms in the city, sitting above the already-elevated Jamaica line station. As high up as this station platform is, the tracks plunge abruptly into a tunnel at the north end. This end of the station slopes sharply downward, and it is less than 200 yards from the platform end to the tunnel's portal. A fine view of the East New York Yard can be had from the northbound platform. Note how the south end of the northbound platform divides into two "legs". Stand at the end of the northbound leg and catch a picture of a Slant R-40 as it roars around the bend and into the station. Also of note is the now-unused "flyover" track, which connects the Canarsie and Broadway lines. Now
and then, a train being rerouted will use these tracks. The southbound connection track can be seen emerging beneath the two "legs" of the northbound platform; the northbound "flyover" with its severe curve can be seen just east of the station, beginning near the signal
tower.

A major renovation at Broadway Junction added
a red aluminum-sided crossover taking the place of the old
crossunders, which have been closed and dismantled. This new
crossover has steps that can be seen through, which makes them
impossible to hide behind and underneath, a safety improvement. In addition to the new
crossover, the platform shed roofs are being replaced and asbestos
removed. New lighting was also installed.
